Plywood finish has been there for a while, but I guess it is quite an unusual finish mostly suitable for "young and quirky" apartments. You can use different top coats and varnishes to finish it nicely and achieve an interesting effect. The colour of plywood really reminds me of Japanese minimal interiors, so if you are going to use a very minimalistic interior style, it could be a nice idea to bring a bit of an interest with some plywood details.
